From "History of Milwaukee" Gregory 1930/31 page 426 for Bernhard, his son

His father (CMC) was a foreman in a sheep tannery in Germany and in 1868 came with his family to the U.S., arriving in Milwaukee on June 22nd of that year.Work was scarce and for several months he was forced to accept any kind of job, but he finally found employment in the Wiese Tannery, the only establishment of that kind in the city. He continued with that concern until he retired from active work. He was born in 1820 and his death occurred in 1916, in the 97th year of his age. The mother was born in 1823 and died in 1911. They are both buried in Union Cemetery.

From "History of Milwaukee" Volume 3 Gregory 1930/31 pages 426-28

BFWC, one of Milwaukee's old and honored residents, had a long and honorable business career, having been actively engaged in the retail grocery buainess for over 40 years, during which period he not only has prospered materially, but also won the uniform confidence of all who had dealings with him. Mr. Conrad was born in Gheifenhagen, Germany, on the 26th of April, 1856.

BFWC received his early education in Germany and was about 12 years of age when brought to this country. In Milwaukee he attended school one year, and then at the age of 13 years, he started to work as a tobacco stripper in a cigar factory at the wage of $1 per week. He later learned the cigar making trade in a 6-month apprenticeship without wages, his father having to pay $50 for the privilege, and was in the employ of Edward Asherman & Co for 6 years. In 1878 he engaged in the grocery business in a small way at the corner of Hubbert St and North Avenue, and this proved a sucessful venture. As the business increased he remodeled and enlarged his store, and continued in the business there until 1921, a period of 43 years. He then sold out to his son, Charles B, who is still conducting the business. After selling, Mr. Conrad remained actively identified with the business assisting his son until 1928, when he retired, although he still devotes part of his leisure hours in helping his son with his books.

During all the years of his residence in Milwaukee Mr. Conrad has consistently stood for those things which have contributed to the growth and stability of the community and his record has been marked by strict adherence to the highest ideals of good citizenship.

All the family (from the 1940's on) referred to him as Ben
